Global Forest Fires: Impact and Response

Global forest fires are an urgent environmental issue. Communities and scientists around the world are observing and responding to the catastrophic impacts caused by this phenomenon. Forest fires not only destroy ecosystems, but also contribute to greater climate change. Forest fires occur due to various factors, including global warming, deforestation, and human activities such as illegal farming and forestry. In Indonesia, for example, fires are often sparked by the practice of burning land to design rice fields, which causes thick smoke and severe air pollution. Uncontrolled deforestation in the Amazon and Australia is also exacerbating the situation, creating “superfires” that are difficult to extinguish. The impact of forest fires is very broad. First, the destruction of natural ecosystems causes loss of habitat for flora and fauna. Endangered species such as orangutans and Sumatran tigers are increasingly under pressure. Additionally, air quality has drastically decreased due to the smoke, causing health problems for millions of people. This smoke contains harmful particles that can cause respiratory and cardiovascular diseases. On the other hand, forest fires also have an impact on climate change. Burning biomass releases carbon dioxide (CO2) which increases the concentration of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. This process contributes to global warming, which in turn worsens the frequency and intensity of fires in the future. According to the IPCC report, global warming could increase forest fires in areas that are already vulnerable. Global responses to forest fires vary widely. Countries with long experience in handling fires, such as Australia and the United States, have more sophisticated fire fighting systems. They also carry out ecosystem rehabilitation and restoration programs after fires. The Indonesian government has, in recent years, made efforts to increase monitoring and prevention following major fires in 2015. International organizations such as WWF and Greenpeace have also been active in awareness campaigns on the importance of protecting forests. They use digital platforms to inform the public about the impact of forest fires, as well as mobilize support for preventive action. At the local level, local communities are often involved in forest monitoring and developing mitigation strategies. The role of technology is also an important factor in forest fire response. The use of satellite imagery and drones helps in monitoring the affected areas. Data-based applications can provide early warnings to prevent further fires. With collaboration between government, NGOs and communities, strategic steps can be taken to reduce the risk of forest fires in the future. In the context of policy change, the need for stricter regulation of industries that contribute to forest fires is clear. Stricter supervision of land burning practices by plantation and forestry companies must be implemented. Apart from that, education about ecosystems and environmental conservation in schools can form a generation that cares more about the environment. Global forest fires are a complex problem that requires cross-sector collaboration, innovation and high levels of public awareness. The long-term impacts on the environment, health and climate change underscore the importance of immediate action to address this problem. In order to protect the planet, continued collective efforts will be the key to a better and more sustainable future.
