Sports Technology Trends for 2023

Back when SportsPro compiled its first list of sports technology trends in January 2020, Tokyo was still preparing to host the Olympics, and social distancing was merely separating fans of opposing teams. Fast forward to 2023, and smart equipment, augmented reality (AR), and virtual reality (VR) are changing the way we watch sports.

The rapid evolution of technology is reshaping how fans engage, athletes perform, and sports generate value. These breakthrough technologies are transforming how sports organizations operate and leverage data and analytics to improve performance, enhance fan experience, and grow revenue.

AI and machine learning are redefining how we consume and experience sports by empowering players and teams to gain a competitive advantage. For example, AI-powered video analytics and predictive algorithms identify player weaknesses and provide insights that can help coaches optimize training plans. Meanwhile, smart helmets reduce concussions and provide coaches with detailed biomechanical analysis of athlete injuries.

Immersive technology is also enhancing the fan experience. Streaming platforms now offer multiple camera angles and high-definition content for viewers, while AR overlays allow fans to see real-time stats and player information during live matches. Meanwhile, VR allows fans to witness a game from the perspective of an individual player or even attend games from home in a virtual environment. Sports federations are also leveraging these immersive technologies to train players by simulating game scenarios. For example, the NFL is using its new e-training system to prepare players for different game situations, and Germany’s National Football Association has implemented virtual reality in training centers to give young players an opportunity to practice difficult moves in a controlled environment.
