The World Series has a long and rich history. This annual championship game was first played in 1905, and except for the 1914 boycott and the players’ strike of 1994 it has been a regular event every year since. It has also featured some of the most dramatic moments in baseball history.
The 2024 World Series was a wild one with the New York Yankees and Los Angeles Dodgers meeting in a best-of-seven series. The Yankees won the first two games and then lost Game 5 to tie the series. But the game was still decided by one of the most amazing plays in baseball history.
In the fifth inning with the Yankees in a five-run hole and facing New York Yankees ace Gerrit Cole, the Dodgers staged a comeback to take the lead. But then the Yankees made three egregious errors on defense, starting with a muffed fly ball by center fielder Aaron Judge and culminating in a double play call that resulted in the bases loaded for the final out of the inning.
And then Freddie Freeman hit the game-winning home run with the World Series on the line in a manner that was as stunning as it was awe-inspiring. The homer was the first World Series home run to end a game with the score tied and it is one of the most famous plays in the history of this iconic contest.
