After a dismal first round, Rory McIlroy has made up huge ground to claim a share of the lead with Bryson DeChambeau at The Masters. The Northern Irishman has a superb short game and he displayed it with a brilliant birdie putt at the 18th – he’s on 11 under, two clear of DeChambeau now.
It’s been a crazy Masters so far and Sunday’s final round at Augusta is sure to be even more thrilling. Rose has maintained his solo lead by producing the lowest second-round score at Augusta National but he now faces a mighty challenge from a group including McIlroy, 2018 champion Patrick Reed, Bryson DeChambeau, Jason Day, Scottie Scheffler and Shane Lowry who are all within five shots of him.
Bryson DeChambeau is one of the players in the hunt for his maiden green jacket but his struggles with approach play are a major concern. The US Open champion ranks low for approach accuracy and that has been a real problem for him at Augusta this week.
DeChambeau tries to rescue himself at the par-five 2nd hole by finding the fairway with his drive but then flirts too closely with Rae’s Creek with his lay-up. He then reaches the green in two with his wedge from 87 yards but misses a long putt from 65ft for birdie and is now on 12 under.
